Fukushima Daiichi Cam 1 Comparisons Across Time

Majia's Blog at Majia's Blog - 13 hours ago
I've been claiming that emissions are up at Fukushima Daiichi since last week's earthquake. Today when I was looking for old screenshots to point out some oddities with the Futaba cam view, I came across some good comparative shots of the TEPCO cam 1 view from October 2014 and October 2015: October 20, 2014 October 22, 2015 October 7, 2017 The plant does not look good from the view of TEPCO cam 1 in October 2017. I will say however that conditions have been far worse over the years. I'll post more comparative screenshots in the near future.

Pecularities of the Futaba Cam View of Fukushima Daiichi

Majia's Blog at Majia's Blog - 13 hours ago
Fukushima is still producing copious steam emissions, continuing a trend that began last week after the 6.0 earthquake. This post however is going to address the pecularities of the Futaba cam view. The Futaba intersection is located west of Fukushima Daiichi. The cam looks east to the Pacific Ocean with Fukushima Daiichi located at the land's eastern edge. The sun rises to the east but the strange thing is that the glow over the plant that is frequently - albeit not always present - shifts south as the sun rises and is located in close proximity to the ground rather than in the s... more »

Life in an Eastern Ukraine Village

Bruce K. Gagnon at Organizing Notes - 13 hours ago
The US war project in eastern Ukraine (Donbass) continues. Here is a video about the village of Sakhanka where they have been repeatedly attacked by the US-backed regime in Kiev. Even the local school as been hit by shells and had to be closed. Recently the regime in Kiev banned the speaking of Russian in Ukraine. Imagine how that goes over with the millions of Russian speaking citizens across the country. Each of these moves by the corrupt cabal (I won't call it a government) in Kiev further adds fuel to the already out-of-control war near the Russian border. Kiev keeps send... more »

This came on last night right after I had finished reading through some rather ignorant comments on my post yesterday about the Senate Intelligence Committee. So here was Rachel doing her deep dive to explain all of the things we know that are factual about the Russian dossier, and also putting to rest the allegation from Richard Burr that Christopher Steele will not return his phone calls. If you ever had any doubts about the importance of this dossier I think Rachel does an excellent job of explaining, in detail, what makes it so important, and how hard people are working to dam... more »

*The Rediscovery of The Mind* *John R. Searle * *The MIT Press* In *The Rediscovery of The Mind*, John Searle elaborates the arguments against the materialists and the dualists that he has been making for more than two decades. In the course of the book, he shows that both materialism and dualism are profoundly mistaken and we need a new approach for explaining the nature of the mind. The problems in materialism and dualism, according to Searle, start with their acceptance of a certain vocabulary and with it a set of assumptions. He points out that the vocabulary is obsolete and th... more »

Review in the News Lens: Ian Easton's The Chinese Invasion Threat...

Michael Turton at The View from Taiwan - 17 hours ago
Easton's book is excellent. My review begins... Despite the flurry of recent media accounts, Ian Easton's new book “The Chinese Invasion Threat: Taiwan's Defense and American Strategy in Asia” makes no prediction of a 2020 invasion of Taiwan. Ignore the erroneous media hype: Easton offers a brilliant, thick description of China's invasion plans, Taiwan's plans to repel an invasion, potential invasion scenarios, and how the U.S. might respond. Throughout the incredible level of detail, and the vast number of plans, locations, weapons systems, operations and doctrines it presents, Ea... more »

This fall, brothers Ammon and Ryan Bundy and their father, Cliven, will face charges over a standoff with federal officials in a dispute over federal lands in Nevada. Many are wondering if they’ll be let off the hook. The two Bundy brothers were acquitted in an October 2016 trial for a different standoff in Oregon. The jury’s “not guilty” verdict on conspiracy charges for the Oregon standoff struck much of the public as shockingly lenient. As a law prof... more »

Should Uncle Sam 'send in the Marines' after hurricanes?

David Polatty, Director, Civilian-Military Humanitarian Response Program, US Naval War College at Politics + Society – The Conversation- 1 day ago
When humanitarian emergencies flare up, what should prompt the U.S. government to “send in the Marines”? Disasters like Hurricane Harvey’s floods in Houston and Hurricane Maria’s devastation of Puerto Rico’s roads and power grid can quickly overwhelm civilian authorities and emergency responders. Military support can make a life-or-death difference in those emergencies. As scholars at the U.S. Naval War College and Harvard Humanitarian Initiative, we have seen that the military can have a profound and positive impact on the immediate response to large-scale disasters such as Hur... more »

The United States and North Korea have had several military confrontations since the end of the Korean War, but few were as potentially dangerous as the seizure of the USS *Pueblo* and her crew. While the incident was eventually resolved peacefully, few knew at the time that President Lyndon Johnson had prepared a range of military options to compel North Korea to release the crew, including air strikes on targets north of the DMZ and a cross-border raid complete with tanks. But happily, none of these have endangered what has underpinned European integration since the late 1940s: securing lasting peace among European states. E... more »
