NiceHash probably stole $65+ million from their users

Luboš Motl at The Reference Frame - 15 minutes ago
A recent event has highlighted the hardcore criminal character of the cryptocurrency world. Up to yesterday, the world's largest shared cryptocurrency mining service was "NiceHash dot com". See that website to figure out that they announced a big hack. Their Bitcoin address was emptied. Some 4,700+ Bitcoins i.e. $65+ million were stolen. The hackers used some very sophisticated "social" tricks, we learn. That sounds rather amusing. Global Crypto Press offers us reasons to think that the actual events behind this huge theft could be more predictable. NiceHash was based in Sl... more »

“Heaven Forbid Peace Should Break Out Between the US and North Korea!”

*“Heaven Forbid Peace Should Break Out * *Between the US and North Korea!”* by Antonius Aquinas "As long as the US Empire can be funded and maintained on the backs of its taxpaying public, the chance of de-escalation of tensions not only on the Korean peninsula, but throughout the world are practically nil. And, as long as the nation’s current interventionist ideology holds sway, it will only be through a financial meltdown that the US’s role as global policeman will come to a much-needed end. The most recent example of the world’s biggest bully escalating matters is its on-again, ... more »

Dec. 6: An Insanely Dangerous Day

Graeme Decarie at The Decarie Report - 12 hours ago
The December 5 edition of the irving press took little time to read. The front page headline - about a man killed in a road accident - wasn't written as a news report at all. It was written as an obituary. There was a real news story, lower on the page and shorter - about a medical committee which advocated privatization of more medical services, along with a note that many doctors vehemently opposed any such move. (It was no great surprise to see that the editorial vehemently supported privatization. The paper almost always opposes government services, even when they are far cheape... more »

Masterpiece Cakeshop and how “religious liberty” became so toxic

Andrew Koppelman at Balkinization - 12 hours ago
Until recently, almost all Americans were for religious liberty. Then LGBTQ rights and the contraception mandate came along. This week, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments over the question of whether a small cake-making business can refuse service to a gay couple — a clash both left and right have elevated into a key moment in the culture wars. Many on the left now regard “religious liberty” as a coded term for discrimination and exclusion. Many on the right feel they are being persecuted for their unpopular beliefs. The current unpleasantness is unnecessary. The tradition of reli... more »

Quote of the Day: Why left & right fight

Peter Cresswell at Not PC - 12 hours ago
*"What the left and right share in common is a demand to go back, to reclaim, to seek revenge against those who resist them... Their positions are largely indistinguishable. And yet, they and their supporters loathe each other. Each considers the other an enemy to be destroyed. This is not a fight about power as such but about in whose service it will be used."* ~ Jeffrey Tucker, from his book* Right-Wing Collectivism: The Other Threat to Liberty* . abstract art - Mike Philbin - new solo exhibition in Oxford UK

Mike Philbin at Mike Philbin's free planet blog - 12 hours ago
My solo exhibition of recent abstract art on canvas, in Caffe Nero @ Oxford UK's flagship Blackwell's book store in Broad Street, was brought forward from mid-December to right now. The exhibition officially opened at 9am on the 4th December 2017, and is due to close on the 31st January 2018: so eight weeks. There's a combined A4 laminated BIO and PRICELIST dotted round the show, and all the paintings have a relevant number, from 1 to 12, but they're abstract and therefore there is no title to help you work out what the image is supposed to mean to you.
